Carlos Fernández, Director de Marimbas del Recuerdo, convoco a las organizaciones Guatemaltecas el Sábado 14 de Agosto del presente año, a una Reunión Informática del PROYECTO GUATETMALA, en el Local que ocupa el Restaurant Chapín en la Plainfield St. en Providence, al que asistieron las organizaciones, GAARI... EL CENTRO GUATEMALTECO DE NUEVA INGLATERRA, ... COMITE INMIGRANTES EN ACCION, PROYECTO ESPERANZA, REP. DE VIDEO GUATEMALA,Y OTROS VOLUNTARIOS... los mismo también asistió a este evento EL CONSEJAL LUIS TEJADA, quien dio a los asistentes una información bien detallada de la planeación del proyecto .. . y dijo Señores Guatemaltecos esto es hecho es una realidad y ahora queremos que ustedes se reúnan formen un Comité para lo que hace falta .... Por fin dijo la Comunidad Guatemalteca tendrá un parque que lleve su nombre y también que sea fiel testigo de la presencia de los Guatemaltecos en Providence, Carlos Fernández quien ha iniciado este proyecto dijo que estuviéramos pendientes de la convocatoria para formar el Comité, y despidió la reunión dándole a todos las gracias por su asistencia.

“Eliminating negative stereo-types of Latinos, encouraging civic participation and empowering Latinos – it’s rewarding.” Sabina Matos is currently employed by New Roots Providence which is a Faith and Community based capacity building initiative under the umbrella of the Providence Plan. She is a Rhode Island College graduate with a B.A. in Communications, Public Relations, and since her early college years Sabina showed interest in working with the community. When it came time to choose where her work-study would take place, Sabina opted for a local social services agency to fulfill her requirement. From that time continuing to the present she has maintained her involvement with issues and organizations that work towards the betterment of the community. Sabina Matos graduated from the Latina Leadership Institute of the Rhode Island Latino Civic Fund in 2003, was appointed Executive Vice-President and later Vice President in 2005, and President in 2007. As a graduate from Leadership for a Future in 2003, she played a key role as a member of the committee organizing the Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride which brought thousands of immigrants, labor unions, elected officials and other supporters of immigrant rights together in Washington DC and New York City in that same year. She is currently a board member of the Olney Ville Housing Corporation and has been since 2004, and is an active board member with the United Way of Rhode Island.

President of the board of ECAS Theater (Teatro ECAS), an organization that works on providing the Rhode Island Latino community with the opportunity to enjoy theater in Spanish without having to travel outside of the state, Sabina, who is an avid Theater buff, volunteers many hours of hard work every year to ECAS’s continuous success. She is currently on the ballot running for City Council representing Ward 15.

My mission is to eliminate lasting negative stereo-types of Latinos, which taint or mask the enormous contributions Latinos have made historically in this great nation, and continue to make locally and nationally. Amidst the race for government positions, gubernatorial debates, endorsements, and eventual promises, there are leaders in our community who remain long after the dust clears. They are not chosen to serve, they serve by choice, and their names are not on the ballot, but often on the board of directors of non-profit organizations. These leaders may prefer to remain in relative anonymity, but indeed are deserving of recognition.

Grace Gonzalez is currently employed by Neighborhood Health Plan of RI as Manager of Membership Outreach. For the past 13 years she has been dedicated to serving her community by helping families obtain affordable health insurance through the State’s RIte Care program. Grace holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration through Ravens University and an Associate Degree in Science through the Community College of RI. She has received numerous community awards. In 2005, she received the Bill Richardson Award recognizing her for her community efforts, in 2003 the Healthy Schools Healthy Kids award for contributions made in coordinated school health, and in 2009 the Cesar Estrada Chavez Award for exceptional leadership, the Yield Community Award, and Extraordinary Woman Award for her community service. She is a former member of the Providence School Board serving from 2004-2010, and she serves on many community boards such as the Back to School of Rhode Island, United by a Smile, Boys Scouts of RI, RI Quality Institute, RIASPA, and Latina Leadership Institute.

Les comparto una nota publicada por el Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), una de las organizaciones más importantes del conjunto de organizaciones fundadas por el tristemente célebre John Tanton, un racista, xenófobo y oftalmólogo de Wisconsin. Desdichadamente, a pesar del origen y naturaleza del CIS, han logrado posicionarse como una de las organizaciones “creíbles” y constantemente citados por medios de prensa nacionales e internacionales de gran reputación tales como el periódico New York Times y El Economista; entre otros. Además, desde los días de la Administración Clinton, han venido siendo consistentemente invitados a testificar ante la Casa de Representantes y el Senado, cuando sea que se llevan a cabo audiencias sobre el tema migratorio.

Como es de imaginarse, ellos han venido trabajando contantemente a favor de la eliminación de programas tales como el TPS, y el “Deferred Enforced Departure (DED),” por considerarlos amnistías parciales de hecho. Gracias por su atención.

There's Nothing as Permanent as

a Temporary Refuge

Well, imagine that! The "Temporary" Protected Status of certain illegal aliens from El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua was just extended, again, for another 18 months.

That will mean that, at the end of this most recent extension, the "temporary" status for Salvadoran illegals will have lasted 11 years (and I assure you it will be extended yet again), and for Hondurans and Nicaraguans 13 years. (The status of Sudanese and Somali illegals "expires" next year, for a total "temporary" stay of 7 and 10 years, respectively.) There are more than 300,000 illegal aliens benefiting from this kind of rolling amnesty. (TPS is ostensibly for illegals we can't or choose not to deport because of natural disaster or civil strife.)

And just yesterday, the application period for Haitian illegals seeking TPS was extended another six months. This matters because, as my CIS colleague David North notes in a posting earlier today, the early applicants for TPS are all likely to have been legitimate, since the main requirement is that they were here at the time of (in Haiti's case) the earthquake. But as the application period continues, the likelihood of fraud escalates as new illegal aliens arrive and buy fake documents to fool the immigration service into believing that they, too, were already here at the time of the earthquake.

There are constant demands by advocates for their favored groups of illegal aliens to be granted TPS; among others, for illegals from Colombia, Guatemala, Venezuela, Chile, Pakistan, Gaza and Lebanon, Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Maldives, Tanzania, Seychelles, Bangladesh, and Kenya. The greatest danger is the possibility of TPS for Mexicans, which would enable the president to effectively amnesty most of the illegal population with the stroke of pen. (This is a different form of administrative amnesty than the one that was reportedly being considered last month.)

Even if the White House feels it couldn't get away with something on that scale, we need to be on the lookout for grants of TPS for smaller groups of illegal aliens any time there’s a hurricane or a mudslide or an earthquake or a flood or a drought or a locust infestation anywhere in the Third World.

Como estamos en una nación donde el calor es extremadamente alto, me propuse buscar algunos "tips" que nos pueden ser muy útiles en este verano. En Casa
Mantener cerradas las ventanas que dan al sol.
Permanecer en las zonas más frescas de la casa.
Abrir las ventanas durante la noche.
Utilizar abanicos, ventiladores o climatizadores (evitar abusar del aire acondicionado)
Tomar duchas frecuentemente.
Tomar agua y jugos naturales incluso sin sed.
Comer raciones de fruta fresca.
Evitar las comidas pesadas, fuertemente condimentadas o muy calientes.
Llevar ropa fresca (de algodón, poco ajustada, de colores claros).
Evitar el alcohol.
Evitar actividades extenuantes en las horas centrales del día. En la Calle
Evitar salir a la calle en las horas centrales del día.
Llevar protegida la cabeza con una gorra.
Usar gafas adecuadas con protección UV.
Buscar lugares públicos con refrigeración para pasar algún rato el día.
Buscar las zonas con sombra si se permanece en la calle.
Llevar ropa fresca pero evitar exponer en exceso la piel al sol.
Llevar un botellín de agua y beber con frecuencia.
Evitar el vehículo en las horas de más calor.
No dejar niños, ancianos o discapacitados dentro del carro.
Consultar los meteorólogos y las previsiones del día. En La Playa
Evitar las horas centrales del día.
Evitar la exposición solar indiscriminada, incluso en días nublados.
Usar en abundancia cremas de protección solar, de alta protección.
Permanecer bajo la sombrilla y usar una gorra protectora.
Cubrir el cuerpo con camiseta si se está en la intemperie.
Bañarse con frecuencia y remojarse la cabeza.
No ingerir comidas pesadas, muy saladas o alcohol.
Evitar que niños y ancianos se expongan al sol en exceso.
Evitar que las personas enfermas estén largo tiempo al sol o expuestas al calor. En la Montaña
Madrugar para iniciar las ascensiones y travesías de madrugada.
Evitar las horas centrales del día para las ascensiones o travesías.
Usar protección solar también en días nublados.
Usar gorra y protector de nuca.
No realizar esfuerzos extenuantes a pleno sol.
Descansar periódicamente a la sombra.
Cubrir el cuerpo con camiseta en las horas de máxima exposición solar.
Tomar suficiente agua periódicamente.
Ingerir bebidas isotónicas puede ser de ayuda.
No ingerir comidas pesada, muy saladas o alcohol.
En caso de accidente o fatiga, resguardarse del sol.
Siempre mantenga su celular a la mano y asegúrese de tener la batería cargada.

EE. UU. crea comité para verificar daños en Guatemala

Un comité de funcionarios del Departamento de Justicia de EE. UU. llegará a Guatemala para verificar los daños causados por la tormenta Ágatha, como requisito en la evaluación del gobierno de Barack Obama para decidir sobre la solicitud de un Estatus de Protección Temporal (TPS, en inglés), para los connacionales en ese país.
Durante la novena sesión ordinaria de la Comisión parlamentaria de Migrantes, Miguel Ángel Ibarra, viceministro de Relaciones Exteriores, informó que, después de la reunión con la secretaria estadounidense de Seguridad Interna, Janet Napolitano, en la que también participó el vicepresidente Rafael Espada, el gobierno guatemalteco recibió información de que ese departamento creó el comité que verificaría el impacto de Ágatha.
“Esto es un paso importante, porque EE. UU. está atento al caso Guatemala”, dijo. El funcionario no supo precisar cuándo arribará la comitiva, sólo expresó que “llegaría al país en cualquier momento”, y que “quizá estarían trabajando ya en el informe”.
El viceministro también explicó que el Gobierno tiene pendiente la entrega del informe de los daños económicos causados por el fenómeno natural, que incluye la pérdida de cosechas.
Ese documento será elaborado por el Banco Mundial, el Banco Interamericano para el Desarrollo (BID) y la Comisión Económica para América Latina y el Caribe (Cepal).
Hasta entonces se completará la solicitud del TPS, añadió.
El funcionario comentó que grupos de migrantes en EE. UU., las iglesias Católica y Evangélica, la Procuraduría de los Derechos Humanos, la Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala y el congresista de Illinois Luis Gutiérrez, se han sumado a la campaña para cabildear por el beneficio migratorio a favor de los connacionales.
“El congresista ha sacado la cara por Guatemala, igual que otros senadores. Ese es el apoyo político que necesitamos. También se lo hemos pedido a líderes de migrantes que conocen a otros políticos”, enfatizó Ibarra.
En las próximas semanas, la Cancillería pedirá apoyo a organizaciones civiles, indígenas, cooperativas y al Foro Guatemala. “Necesitamos que se pronuncien a favor del TPS”, dijo.
De acuerdo con el viceministro, esas expresiones son las que se requieren para ejercer algún tipo de influencia en la decisión del presidente Obama.
“No funcionan medidas de presión, protestas o manifestaciones, porque eso solo crearía conflicto. La estrategia es por la vía diplomática y política”, comentó.
El diputado Mauro Guzmán, presidente de la Comisión parlamentaria de Migrantes, expresó que el otorgamiento de un TPS no conlleva la detención de las deportaciones por quebranto de las leyes estadounidenses.
“Tenemos reportes que la gran mayoría de guatemaltecos que regresan al país han cometido delitos o faltas en EE. UU.”, aseveró. Orinar en la vía pública, conducir en estado de ebriedad y agresiones físicas a mujeres son algunas de las causas, explicó el diputado. “No esperemos que el TPS salve a connacionales que cometen esas faltas”, aseveró.

Center for Hispanic Policy and Advocacy (CHISPA) Announces Layoff

Providence, RI- The Center for Hispanic Policy and Advocacy (CHisPA) recently announced the layoff of Executive Director Michelle Cortes-Harkins, who helped transition CHisPA through the previous director’s departure and spearheaded the organization’s recent development.

"We wish Michelle every continued success and offer our sincere thanks to her for all her contributions to CHisPA" said Doris Blanchard, Chair of the CHisPA Board of Directors. “Unfortunately, in the current economy the non-profit sector has been hit particularly hard, and in the interest of maintaining our current level of programming and service to the Hispanic community, we have been forced to make some very difficult decisions.”

Ms. Carola Campos, Health Programs Director, will be the main contact person and, together with the Board of Directors, overseeing the implementation of future initiatives. Ms. Blanchard remarked that "the staff and Board of Directors will continue with their commitment ensuring that even in these difficult times, we can continue broadening CHisPA’s appeal, services and membership."

The current staff members, other employees, and the Board of Directors will help implement a newly adopted strategic plan.

Senador, Sheldon Whitehouse, el Congresista Patrick Kennedy Intercambian Coincidencias con el Presidente de México

El día ayer en Washington. El Presidente Felipe Calderón Hinojosa dio un emotivo discurso en el Congreso de la Unión y que durante 35 minutos el Presidente abordo temas qué conciernen a México y a los Estados Unidos. Afortunadamente tuvimos la oportunidad de poder estar presente en este histórico evento de estado en la cual tuvimos la oportunidad de poder ver y analizar las reacciones inmediatas de Congresistas y Senadores ahí presente en la cual las reacciones sin duda fueron mixtas y en la mayoría de las beses de aprobación absoluta. Se tuvo la oportunidad de poder ser testigo en este evento histórico, gracias a los esfuerzos de el Sanador Sheldon Whitehouse en la cual se nos brindo una atención exclusiva a los eventos previos y los eventos posteriores después de que el Presidente Felipe Calderón hiciera su exposición ante los H. Miembros del Congreso y los H. Miembros del Senado. El ver tenido la oportunidad también de poder hacer Lobby con otros Senadores Federales de diferentes estados de la Unión Americana fue también un espacio qué también se logro en nuestra estadía en la Capital de los Estados Unidos. Sin duda el tema central que se escuchaba por los pasillos del Hart Building y el las escalinatas del Senado era sin duda el tema de alguna Reforma Migratoria, el Narcotráfico y la frontera entre México y los Estados Unidos. Y en los rostros de los Congresistas y Senadores cuando teníamos la oportunidad de intercambiar coincidencias sobre los temas del momento básicamente ellos reaccionaba positivamente y con la esperanza de poder encontrarle solución a estos graves problemas qué siguen pendientes en la agenda norteamericana. Así mismo también pudimos ver como el Presidente de México en una reunión privada, hizo entrega Póstuma al Senador Edward Kennedy del máximo reconocimiento con el "Águila Azteca" qué recibió esta condecoración su esposa Viky y familiares del Senador Kennedy. Nuestra visita en la Ciudad Capital, termino el día de ayer cuando visitamos la Embajada de México Washington D.C. En donde también se entrego un paquete de recomendaciones en la cual se expresa los temas abordados previamente. Se recalca nuevamente fue una visita no usual a Washington, por que en esta ocasión se tuvo la oportunidad de hacer Lobby con Legisladores de Estados Unidos como con Legisladores de México y con el Mismo Presidente de México en la cual gracias a las intervenciones de el Senador Sheldon Whitehouse y el Congresista Patrick Kennedy el Presidente de México nos dio momentos adicionales para el intercambio de los temas que conciernen a México y los Estados Unidos.

Con la amistad y el respeto de siempre….… Qué Sí Se Puede!!
